Unsound translates a two-dimensional bathymetric map of Cockburn Sound near Garden Island (Meeandip), into a crochet structure drained of life and water.
In 2021, Australia entered the Aukus trilateral partnership to secure the Indo-Pacific against China’s perceived threat to the region. As a deterrent and measure of protection, it zeroed in on nuclear-powered submarines. Consequently, the UK and the US nuclear submarines routinely rotate through the WA coastline and Garden Island naval base.
At the same time, these efforts come with a threat of their own. To the south of Garden Island is the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, with its unique and diverse ecosystem and Garden Island itself is on the Commonwealth Heritage List.
